Miracle calf changes colour

American Indians see the millennium not as a time of disaster but as one requiring hard work to right all the wrongs of past centuries. It also brings a
future filled with promises of hope, a moment when ancient prophecies are fulfilled.

An ancient legend foretold the appearance of a white buffalo. This sacred prediction became reality five years ago with the birth of a white buffalo calf named "Miracle", in Wisconsin, USA. [See Share International,
September 1996, p15]

Seventy-year-old Crow Dog, a Lakota Sioux, travels the world talking about belief among Native Americans. She remembers hearing her grandparents speak of the white buffalo calf which would come signalling a new beginning for mankind.

Now the calf has grown, but what is remarkable is that it has changed colour several times: from white at birth to red, then dark brown and then yellow. The colours symbolize the races of the earth. It is expected to turn white again.

Lakota Sioux tradition tells of the beautiful 'White Buffalo Woman' who
appeared at a time of great hunger and gave the tribe various sacred rituals. The woman promised she would return one day, and as she walked away she was transformed into a white buffalo.

The leaders believe "Miracle" is the fulfilment of that promise and a sign of better times for all, but first much must be done to restore balance.

"Everywhere I go people are talking about being scared for the future," Crow Dog said, but more and more American Indians are returning to traditional values and telling both their own people and others that all must
work together to restore peace and harmony between nature and man.

The miracle calf has shown the way - all colours must co-operate to ensure the future of our planet.

Miracle buffalo's changing colours

All cultures and faiths receive signs appropriate to them, and Native Americans are no exception. Seven years ago a white buffalo calf was born - in itself a miracle for two reasons: firstly her birth was predicted long ago and had become an intrinsic part of folk-knowledge passed on through the generations, and secondly, the birth of a white calf symbolizes a time of regeneration.

A 70-year-old member of the Lakota Sioux, named Crow Dog, travels the world talking about belief among Native Americans. She remembers hearing her grandparents speak of the white buffalo calf which would come, signalling a new beginning for mankind. Now the buffalo has grown, and is famous for another miracle: over the years she has changed colour several times - from white at birth to red, then dark brown and then yellow. The colours symbolize the races of the earth. She is expected to turn white again and with her upcoming seventh birthday she will be watched carefully for any colour change.
