Letters engraved in squash seeds

Kasim Barakzia, owner of Baba Afghan Restaurant in Salt Lake City, Utah, found hundreds of banana squash seeds marked with what appeared to be letters and other symbols. Barakzia cut into a banana squash and noticed the seeds, normally smooth like those found in a pumpkin, were etched on each side with markings that resembled English and Arabic letters, numbers, and even the Arabic symbol for Allah, or God. Other seeds had markings that looked like a tree and bird.

Barakzia said he has cut into two or three banana squash every other day for the past nine years and has never seen anything like this.

One person who stopped by the restaurant to take a look at the unusual seeds said some of the engravings looked like Hebrew letters.

Barakzia said he believes some of the etchings look like Japanese, Chinese and even Hindu.

"I would like someone who knows these languages to come and look," he said. "Maybe there is a message for someone."

One local horticulturist said he believes insects likely made the markings.

But Dave Rosenfeld, who photographed the seeds, said: "I noticed that the seed itself still had the skin or a membrane around it which makes the seed smooth to the touch. So, in fact, you would have to take off this skin or membrane to actually feel the markings or engravings that are in the seed. . ..

There was no way that a worm or any insect could do that because it would have eaten through the skin or membrane."
